About Four Letter Word
Four Letter Word was founded in 2025 by Lucas Falick, H. Tait Brencher, and Isaac DeMarchi for the purposes of mounting a production of The Skriker by Caryl Churchill. The three met studying theater at Skidmore College and discovered a mutual frustration with the lack of creative opportunities and large barrier of entry for professional work in NYC. The company was born as a result, to create opportunities for young artists where they did not previously exist. Over a series of three meetings in September 2025, Lucas, Tait, and Isaac consumed an entire cheesecake and developed their idea, dreaming up the name “Four Letter Word” to imply vulgarity and an unapologetic commitment to authentic, bold work.
FLW’s debut was a sold-out staged reading of Machinal by Sophie Treadwell, an event designed to connect with a new artistic community and begin to put its producing arm to work. Building on that success, FLW went on to produce The Skriker, a play frequently cited on lists of “unproduceable plays” thanks to its large ensemble of inhuman characters, colorful stage directions, and complex poetic language. Despite all that, FLW went ahead and produced it anyway, affirming its dedication to supporting the vision of our young artists. Actors and community members expressed their appreciation for the play’s impact, sharing sentiments such as “I don’t invite people to most of my acting work, but this one I definitely will.” The run sold out quickly.
Our 2026-27 season is dedicated to developing the company’s artistic identity within New York City, experimenting with our productions and continuing to grow our community. From the live comedy special Last Night Ever with Mary MacK to a sold-out staged reading of Marisol, to our upcoming productions of Sensitive Guys and The Moors, all of FLW’s work is giving early-career actors, directors, designers and artists the opportunity to create theater that they don’t have the chance to make elsewhere.
